Being a Positive Role Model 24/7!
As we enter the school year and many are utilizing our Social and Soft Skills curriculum for students, we are reminded as teachers/parents that we too could occasionally use a brush up on our skills. I once had a teacher share that she felt the parents of her students needed the program as much as the kids. Well, whether or not that is true, it doesn’t hurt to be reminded that we are role models for the next generation and showing things like empathy and respect for our children helps them to do the same. Many of us have a concern for our kids and their obsession with phones and social media, but it’s important to also reflect on how often we, as parents, are distracted by our own obsession with technology. It’s a conversation that will only become more prominent as technology becomes more savvy. Let’s remember that the film of childhood can never be run through for a second showing…stop to enjoy them and continue to be a positive role model for the young!
As James Baldwin said, “Children have never been good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.”
